Précédée par La personne humaine au XIIIe siècle, portant sur les discernements de l’anthropologie et de la noétique thomasiennes s’opposant à la thèse d’un intellect unique pour tous, la présente étude met en lumière, au bénéfice d’une acception exigeante de la personne humaine, la proximité du principe premier de la noétique d’Averroès, dûment réinterprétée, et de l’épistémologie de Thomas qui a libéré la théologie latine de l’impasse où elle était enfermée à propos de la connaissance eschatologique de Dieu « tel qu’il est ». Le principe fondamental qui commande la conception, combattue par Thomas, de l’unicité de l’intellect est en fait issu d’Aristote : la Cause première, Pensée qui se pense toujours en acte, suscite par séduction noétique en tout intellect, de soi en puissance, la promotion à l’intellection en acte. Or, au registre théologique, c’est ce même principe qui permet à Thomas de dépasser l’impossibilité d’une adéquation de l’intellect humain à l’infinie essence de Dieu : Dieu lui-même, en son don transcendent, assure, sous mode de forme intelligible, à l’intellect de chaque élu l’intellection de Dieu « tel qu’il est ». Ce discernement de haute sagesse permet aussi à Thomas d’Aquin d’assumer, tout en l’interprétant, l’enseignement de Bernard de Clairvaux quant à la coopération (« totus effectus ab utroque agente », version de l’amésôs dionysien), rebelle à toute analyse, du libre arbitre humain et de la grâce divine
